Education for the Senses: Aromatherapy School

If you are a doctor, or are considering becoming one and want to incorporate holistic healing into your practice, consider attending an aromatherapy school. This unofficially accredited certificate course will educate you in the many different types of aromatherapy, essential oils and the benefits it can offer you and your patients.

Here are some facts about aromatherapy schools to see if it is right for you and your medical practice:

Natural Medicine

Aromatherapy is the use of natural oils that are derived from flowers, roots, twigs, and other items from the earth to help rest or rejuvenate the mind and the body. Aromatherapy oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin to create a sense of healing calm physically and mentally. The basis of aromatherapy is essential oils, which is the heart of the plant it originates from. Essential oils can be used independently or mixed together to form a healing blend of fragrances.

Who It's For

An aromatherapy school is offered to primarily medical practitioners as well as massage therapists. Those who are licensed to practice medicine can take an aromatherapy course if they are interested in supplemental treatment that is holistic. But if you are an owner of a natural foods store, or holistic counselor, you can also take the courses to better your understanding.

Requirements

Because it is not an official accredited program, going to an aromatherapy school is not a way to gain a "license". Many courses do, however, offer diplomas or certificates upon completion of the course. Course loads sometimes range from 12 to 100 hours of coursework to achieve the certification. The average cost of aromatherapy school is around $500, and financial aid availability varies with each location.

Curriculum

The basic teachings in aromatherapy schools is to address questions such as what is aromatherapy, what different oils are used, how can they be used effectively and how they work on the body and mind. Courses will teach students how aromatherapy works into the bloodstream through inhalation or absorption to create a sense of relaxation and ease. They will also teach you various ways to blend oils, how different oils have different effects physically and mentally.

Whether you are a doctor, health store owner, or masseuse, consider taking courses at a nearby aromatherapy school. This type of education will teach you how to better treat your clients through natural, holistic methods.
