Dysplastic Nevi

Dysplastic Nevi is known to occur in more than one million people throughout the world each year and it is a form of skin blemish that can eventually turn into cancer. As research attempt to find a cure and effective treatments, skin cancer continues to grow at an alarming rate.

Usually people with dysplastic nevi will have at least a hundred of them and sometimes more. They have notches on the borders and are not regular in shape. They can be a large blemish that have mixed colors and are at least one quarter of an inch in size.

Causes

There are several reasons why dysplastic nevi will turn into cancer. The most common cause is extreme exposure to UV light. An increase of skin cancer every year is due to the increased use of tanning beds. The dysplastic nevi are the weakest point in the skin which is why they are the most affected by UV light. Cancer causing cells are created when UV light attacks such areas.

Dysplastic nevi is more likely to become skin cancer is people have an impaired immune system as well. To some degree the body can fight off cancer causing cells but not when the immune system is impaired, this is when the risk of getting multiple cancers is possible.

Dysplastic nevi are also known to turn to skin cancer rapidly when in contact with certain chemicals. People have worked to ban the chemicals identified by researchers as cancer causing at all costs. However, there are still several known chemicals on the market that can cause cancer so you should be careful when you are handling any solution.

Symptoms

Some symptoms of dysplastic nevi are easy to identify but they may vary by patient. You should contact your doctor immediately to have testing done if you find any changes to your dysplastic nevi.

Compare the dysplastic nevi to others on your body and look for ones that are slightly different. The best sign is the uniformity of lesions. Do not hesitate to contact your doctor if you doubt them for any reason.

You should monitor the dysplastic nevi that affect your body and check their borders. You should contact your doctor immediately if they have overly irregular borders outside normal for dysplastic nevi. When dysplastic nevi turn to skin cancer then pain and itching may also occur. However, when new dysplastic nevi appear on the body this can also occur. If you have new dysplastic nevi you should contact your doctor and tell them it needs to be checked.

A common indicator of skin cancer is when color changes occur to dysplastic nevi. Non uniform color is common with dysplastic nevi but if the colors change drastically then medical attention should be received as soon as possible.

Treatments

Depending on the area of where the dysplastic nevi occurs the treatment for those that have turned to skin cancer will vary. A doctor will often opt to remove the affected area with surgery. This will often depending on where the dysplastic nevi appears. A simple incision should be the only method for removing a lesion if the area is easily accessible.

When the local anesthetic wears off there is only a minor discomfort occurring in patients but other than this the surgery is relatively pain free. A doctor will typically administer a local to numb the area rather than putting out a person completely since it is not necessary.

A doctor may consider therapies to combat the spread of the cancer if the dysplastic nevi occurs in an area that is more dangerous. In these cases a common option is radiation therapy. In comparison to other forms of cancer the amount of sessions needed is small and consists of a small beam aimed directly at the infected lesion to kill only the cells in the affected area. Your doctor will help you to determine which treatment options are best for your needs.
