Pruritis

Pruritis is simply the medical term for an itch. You should have any severe and constant itch checked by a doctor since they can diagnosis anything that may be seriously wrong with the itch. Itching on the body can be caused by a number of things. After a few seconds the feeling of an itch will normally pass or as soon as you scratch you loose the sensation to itch. An allergic reaction to something you are wearing or using can cause another form of itching. If you have an irritation on the skin you obviously want to get rid of it so you will inevitably scratch. An insect bite or even sunburn can also cause itching. Anything bothersome to an individual will seemingly have a feeling and reason to constantly itch.

What To Expect

A lot of itching is what you can expect from pruritis. Problems can develop in the future on your skin if you continue to relieve yourself by constantly scratching the problem area. Soon the area will turn red and the problem will become even more irritating. You body can also break out in sores and in some cases an infection of the skin if you constantly itch. Those who have suffered from pruritis know that even sleeping can seem impossible. People with this condition are often tossing and turning all night. They also can’t get a good nights sleep because they are scratching. The following morning these individuals look drained and their mental attitude may be slow.

Age Group

In most cases it is unknown which age group pruritis will attack. The urge to itch is experienced by everyone and some are more prone to it than others. Constant itching is a daily part of life for those with dry skin. Skin disorders like pruritis can develop if people constantly scratch for long periods of time. The elderly do seem to be more prone to the skin disorder pruritis. It isn’t known why there seem to be more cases of this disorder in the elderly compared to adults, teenagers and children.

Diagnosis and Testing

It can be hard to diagnose pruritis. Narrowing it down can be difficult since there are many other skin disorders. While doctors can narrow it down they may need to take blood samples and other treatments in order to complete a diagnosis. Blood tests may also be needed to help confirm a diagnosis. Doctors do have to be careful since there are so many other skin conditions. A doctor may look for an allergic reaction to something or even an insect bit or poison ivy if you complain of scratching a lot. It is not easy to diagnose pruritis.

Treatments for Pruritis

There are a couple of treatments available for those who suffer from pruritis. Although these treatments won’t stop the scratching they will help sooth the body a little to deter the scratching. Moisturizers is the main treatment that you can use to help cool down the problem area and help you to relax. There is also calamine lotion which is more of a soothing helper than an itch stopper. These lotions should only be used if the itching is isolated to one part of the body.

Summary

It is important to remember that itching doesn’t always mean pruritis. Itching has many different causes such as dandruff, dry skin and even insect bites. If you do develop an itch there isn’t any real reason to worry. A quick trip to the doctor may put you at ease if you are worried. To eliminate other options or to confirm pruritis then a blood test may be taken.
