Black and Gray TattoosBlack and gray are two dark colors which in general have negative connotations in most of the cultures. Thus, black is associated with death or with evil forces and gray has sometimes the connotation of a dull, rainy day. Such tattoos have been noticed for the first time in prisons, as a symbol of lack of liberty, and of boring life there and perhaps as a symbol of convicts’ negative thoughts. On the other hand, as convicts used to have all the time in the world available, they tattooed large areas of their body using black or gray ink. Nowadays such tattoos are popular everywhere, not only in prisons. Actually at the origin of the black and gray tattoos is a quite logical aspect. In prison convicts did not have adequate tattoo equipment, therefore they used cigarette ash, and of course the outcome was based on black and gray images. A black tattoo can, however have positive connotations, too, especially relating to the idea of contrast between the light color of the skin and its strong, dark color. If you want a black tattoo you can have innocent thoughts and think of Snow White’s black ebony hair in contrast with her white skin, or you can have esoteric thoughts and think of the contrast and the attraction between yin and yang symbols, you can think of night and day or the everlasting fight of man to overcome evil forces. Black tattoos can be borne as well as an expression of letting go any negative feeling from our soul, as an expression of getting out the black hell evil forces and replacing them with pure bright light. To continue with, black is a very strong non-color, it is a very energetic one, as people having black eyes are usually strong personalities, easily intimidating people around them. So you can have all these in your mind when you are decided to have a black tattoo made. As far as gray color is concerned, taking into account that it is a combination between black and white, we can interpret it in different manners. Gray can be the expression of indecision. In some countries there is a question related to making decisions: “Well, how is it, black or white?” And if you are hesitating, you can answer: “I don’t know; it’s gray.” Gray tattoos express shadows and they can be very realistic. They can be combined as well, and black is used for lines and grey for shadows. On the one hand they can be depressing, just like a world without colors. But on the other hand we sometimes feel like finding refuge in a black and white or even grey world, in order to be able to talk to ourselves, without being attracted by any color. If you bear a black and gray tattoo your message for the world can be: “Yes, I’m a realistic person who knows that life is not at all a rainbow, but a roller coaster of black, gray and sometimes white rails.” Black and Gray Tattoos Pictures
