Egyptian Tattoos

As with all categories and types of tattoo art, the Egyptian tattoos have deeper meanings and are based on Egyptian mythology, scenery and culture. These tattoos are generally very exquisite, intricate and colorful. They are mostly based on or are even a mixture of  the gods and goddesses of the myths which are a mixture of human and mythical forms, pharaohs, pyramids, sphinxes, hieroglyphics, Egyptian designs of the time and the desert. Such tattoos that have so much detail are usually larger in size, however they can be downscaled to provide small accents or only specific symbols can be used as a nice little decorative touch, such as the eye of the god Horus an ankle or wrist tattoo or a small cobra, scarab or ankhs (general symbol for eternal and present life).

Although in modern day Egypt tattooing is not common, because of religious beliefs. However, this was not always the case and many experts say that the whole idea and art of tattoos actually originated in ancient Egypt and the mummies that have been found even prove it. Both males and females during those times were decorated with tattoos and the practice of tattooing even started in Egypt and traveled slowly with pioneers to all over the world.

Almost everyone is in some way familiar with Egyptian mythology and the ancient Egyptian culture is back in style now. That is why more and more people are asking and researching about Egyptian tattoos. If you are interested in seeing what is mean by Egyptian tattoos before making a decision, you can just search for that through a popular search engine and you will be overwhelmed by all the pictures and samples of these tattoos. It would be a good choice to start with tattoo designers or studios that claim they specialize in Egyptian based tattoo designs, because there you will find the most pictures of tattoos that have really been done. There are also several websites that offer tattoo patterns to download for print and then you can look through them all and have an idea of what you want before going to the tattoo artist. If you find a tattoo artist in your area that is knowledgeable of Egyptian tattoos then you can even collaborate with him and develop your own tattoo which incorporates all the features of Egypt you want.

In order to know or gain an idea of what kind of tattoo you would like, you should first inform yourself about the main figures and their meanings.  Among the most well-known and frequently used Egyptian tattoos have to do with such the goddesses Isis and Bastet, and the gods Osiris, Amun and Ra. All of these had to do with a certain animal and represents a different part of life. For example, the goddess Bastet who is known as a protector and healer and is symbolized by the cat and when drawn is a woman with a cat’s head. In fact, cats are generally common in Egyptian tattoos because they were also very popular and beloved in the culture.
