Tattoos Main

Tattoo or the dermal pigmentation as technically termed hardly needs any introduction nowadays. Tattoo is widely known as the design made in the skin by inserting pigment in it mainly for decoration reasons. Tattoos on the human skin are also considered as the decorative modifications whereas tattoos applied on the animal bodies are mostly for their identification purpose. Tattoos are widely practiced all over the world nowadays. As reflected in the history, the Ainu – the original Japanese used to wear the facial tattoos. Also tattoos were greatly used in the Polynesian population as well as in some tribal groups of Africa, Philippines, China, Borneo, North and South America, Cambodia, Europe, Mesoamerica and Japan. This art is progressively popularizing all over the world again.

It is widely believed that the preliminary root to the word tattoo is perhaps derived from the Tongan or Tahitian word Tatau which precisely means to mark or strike twice which retaliates to the traditional methods of applying the tattoo designs. Also the instrument used for piercing the skin in Polynesian tattooing process is called the hahau. Tattooing is Eurasian practice precisely since Neolithic times. Mummies bore tattoos and were dated since the end of the second millennium BC as found at Pazyryk on the Ukok Plateau. However in Japan the tattooing dates back to the Paleolithic age nearly ten thousand year back. Many other cultures too have had tattoo traditions such as rubbing cuts, wounds with ashes and the hand-pricking the skin for inserting the dyes.

Usually tattoos are done for the sake of the fun and fashion in majority of the cases. However, in some cultures the people are found to go for tattoos on the religious or spiritual devotional grounds. Even some get it done for exhibiting bravery, sexual entice and marks of fertility, oaths of love, as punishments, charms and mascots or protection. In the olden days the slaves and convicts were also forced to have tattoos of their masters or conviction numbers etc. The symbol and influence of tattoos however differ according to the place and cultures often with unintentional reactions. In the modern times the tattoos are done for cosmetic, sentimental or memorial or religious or even for magical reasons besides symbolizing their belonging to or just recognition with specific criminal gangs or groups. In some nations like Laos, Cambodia and Thailand the yantra tattoos are widely applied for the protection against evils as per their belief.

We can also sometimes find tattoos applied on different animals for decorative and identification reasons. Pet dogs and cats are tattooed with their serial numbers generally on their ear or inner thigh through which their owners are identified in case of need. The tattoos are even used as the type of cosmetics especially as permanent makeup or concealing or neutralizing discoloration of the particular skin area. Permanent makeup tattoos are made to enhance eyebrows, lips, eyes or moles mostly using natural colors as the designs should match the makeup. Tattoos are even engraved on various other body parts by both men and women for many purposes that are mostly very personal.
