Punk TattoosPunk tattoos belong to a culture which flourished in the 1970s in America and in Britain as well. It is based on non-conform appearance from the point of view of clothing, hairstyle, tattoos and jewelry. Punks have created their own universe; they have obeyed their own rules and they have not been interested in what other normal people could say about them. Actually most of the persons who see them can consider them selfish or even stupid and most of the times they despise punks. In general punk tattoos are a mixture of images coming from different cultures. As they want to be remarked by people around them, their tattoos are usually visible, on their faces or on their head. Punk culture can be associated with specific music; therefore they can have tattooed images which are connected to punk related music. To continue with, punks have also found tribal tattoos interesting, maybe because they could have been associated to a modern, special tribe. As dragons are fantastic and mysterious animals, they can be seen tattooed with dragon images too, as well as with other animal images, as a symbol of wild physical strength. Skulls and marihuana leaves are directly related to the fact that most of them used drugs in order to boost their disconnection from the real world. The image of a biker might be considered expression of freedom and the British flag could give them sort of national identity. Even if they prefer their tattoos to be visible, punks can tattoo any area of their body: feet, wrist, fingers, neck, lower back, chest, hips, thighs, hands, arms, even intimate areas. Punk tattoos are usually very colorful and they actually have a sort of logics in everything they do. As they are not satisfied with the laws of the society they lived in, they decided to find a form of protest against it, expressed even in these tattoos suggesting anarchy, rebellion, horror or disgust. Each image has its meaning and most of the images are related to their protest. Their society was considered a monotonous one, in which most of the people had no creativity; therefore it was a colorless and color blind society which had nothing to say. Such people as punks considered they were tortured and scarified because they were forced to live in such a society. That is why they could not stand it and because they did not use armed force4 in order to express their disgust, they decided to form a special group which of course refused to mingle with the rest of the members of the society and they were of course rejected by them. Girls in general, but not only, because in cartoons and in punks’ world everything is possible, used to wear brightly colored makeup, a lot of metallic accessories, and piercing apart from their tattoos. These groups have not belonged only to the 1970s generations, as nowadays too there are enough groups who don’t agree with contemporary patterns so punk hair style and tattoos will continue a tradition started about 37 years ago.
