Religious Tattoos

Many people have their special connection with God and they usually express it through different religions which in time have set special rules in different communities. It was said that the 21st century would be religious or it would not be at all. But it appears that the first version is valid, as it is obvious in a lot of manifestations, including religious tattoos.

During the Roman Empire any kind of tattoos were considered lacking civilization. Only barbarian peoples had religious tattoos and there were times when that person who was discovered bearing a religious tattoo was put to death. Their motivation was that God created human beings with a body which should not be changed during their life by human means. But this belief was not long lasting as during Roman wars their warriors appreciated the religious tattoos they saw on barbarians’ bodies and started to have tattoos done as well.

Among the first religious tattoos there were those expressing Christian symbols of faith. However tattooing appears as opposing to the idea according to which it is a sin to have your body tattooed as long as it is the temporary location of the Holy Spirit.

On the other hand, it is said that the Bible contains lines which talk about holy signs on bodies.

Nowadays religious tattoos express personal beliefs but most of the times they express people’s wish to be closer to divinity in their own way. Therefore they have tattooed images of angels, crosses or Virgin Mary’s broken heart or hands praying.

It is said that we all have guardian angels which help us all through our lives and some people believe that having an angel tattooed they can be closer to their guardian angels. To continue with, it is said that a cross sign establishes the energy balance of the human body, that is why in Christian culture this sign is extremely powerful. Maybe for this reason a lot of people have crosses tattooed on their bodies. We have to add that Celtic cross is used too, as a symbol of hidden forces found in the human soul and having other meanings related to communication with the invisible world.

Virgin Mary is in Christian religion a powerful symbol, too. She is the symbol of a strong and wise mother, who was able to convert suffering in kindness and who is always able to help you, praying God for you, if you ask it. Her hands praying as a religious tattoo may signify the eternal hope of human beings in the infinite divine mercy and willingness to help us.

Whatever is your belief and motivation, you have to be sure when you want to bear a tattoo, irrespective of its type, because it will be part of your body and it will offer you identity and personality. There are women or even men who after marriage convert to the religion of their husband or wife. Therefore, if you want a religious tattoo and you are not married yet, you should wait until you find your soul mate, because if you decide to change religion you might have to change your tattoo as well, which is not an easy operation at all.
