Samoan Tattoos

In Samoa tattoos have been involved in ceremonies performed when a new tribe chief has been chosen and they have been considered essential elements in his evolution. The way signs were painted on Samoan people’s bodies made a group of French people in 1787, which were there in an expedition say: “men have hips tattooed so that one can believe that they wear clothes, even if they are quite naked.” Holland and New Zealand have been influenced by Samoan tattoo art.

If you are curious to improve your knowledge concerning Samoan culture and visit this community, the first aspect which attracts your attention is their tattoos.

Therefore you can remark them since your first contact with the population there. Samoan tattoos attract attention without a doubt for some reasons like the complexity of the drawing and the painful process of having a tattoo done. What is as well remarkable is the visual impact of these tattoos, especially when they cover half of a person’s body.

Samoan tattoos are very rich in significances for those belonging to that culture, which is obvious at first sight, even if we don’t know what they represent. The tattoos models and their symbols are complex and abstract, being made of a multitude of mixed shapes.

As we have already stated, they are remarkable as well through the surface which is covered by them on the human body, especially when the tattooing procedure is performed using traditional methods, which is a real resistance test for the person who has the tattoo done. Instead of needles your skin is perforated with a pig or shark tooth. And if you have started to get a tattoo and because of the pain you have given up, it is a shame reason in the community.

Even if few of us would like to have an authentic Samoan tattoo, including Samoan symbols and models in a modern tattoo is not that painful.

Samoan tattoos have been considered by local people a symbol of spiritual forces. Actually, these peoples who are quite far from the modern and civilized world are really closely related to natural forces and they have their own rules and beliefs which they consider sacred and they respect them. A Samoan tattoo can be considered a physical connection between the invisible and the visible world, it is like a communication portal between human beings and their spiritual guides, their beloved relatives who passed away and the expression of an infinite hope in the power of gods who protect Samoan people and help them whenever they are invoked.

But if we leave behind these beliefs and traditions, a Samoan tattoo can be interesting only through the idea that it makes you dream of remote, tropical islands, of strange people who still eat taro roots and cook their dinner at a fire, wrapping a fish for example in some leaves and eating it after it has been cooked. You can dream of an adventure holiday, surrounded by palm trees and sleeping in a hut with local people and their fascinating or terrifying stories about incredible relationships between humans and spirits. And all these dreams can come to you, while watching your Samoan tattoo.
