Easiest Way Brighten Your Smile: Tooth Whitening Tray

The basic whitening process involves bleaching of the teeth whether by gel or by laser. The process has the following steps - first, the teeth should be evaluated by a dentist who will check for sensitivity, cavities, gum disease, ulcers, and other possible problems. Once all that gets the okay, the whitening of teeth is done with the help of a solution containing carbamide peroxide. The dentist will more often than not use a high percentage of this compound, higher than you'd find in an over-the-counter product; they will also know how to protect your teeth by using fluoride to balance the treatment.

How Does a Tooth Whitening Tray Work?

The process of whitening of the teeth involves applying a gel-like solution to surface of the teeth when a professional bleaching method is used, and a whitening powder when the laser method is used. In both cases the gums and surrounding area are protected by using a tooth whitening tray so the teeth can be treated without the solution irritating the surrounding areas. So the tooth whitening tray is a very convenient way to whiten your teeth, and it costs a fraction of what treatment at the dentist would cost. But when you use the tooth whitening tray, keep the following points in mind:

  • In order to prevent making your teeth sensitive to hot and cold foods and liquids following the treatment, start brushing your teeth with an oxygenated toothpaste at least two to three weeks before you plan to have your teeth whitened -- this will strengthen your teeth to minimize any reaction
  • In order to obtain the best and brightest results, the tray will need to fit as snugly as possible without hurting the gums, so carefully follow the molding instructions included with the kit.
  • Choose a home-based kit that uses a carbamide peroxide base and not glycerine based, which harms the teeth. Ensure that the formula you buy has a minimum 21 percent concentration of carbamide peroxide.
  • Post application of the whitening gel, use only an oxygenated mouthwash so as not to disturb the work of the whitening formula -- an alcohol based mouthwash will neutralize the effects of the whitening process.

A tooth whitening tray may also used by the dentist when performing a professional bleaching of teeth using gel. The function of the tooth whitening tray remains the same, however -- to protect the gums and surrounding area from the effects of the gel applied on the teeth.
