Varicose Veins Surgery

Many people around the world suffer from varicose veins. For some, doing nothing works fine. For others however, these enlarged veins can create low self-esteem and other health problems, both mental and physical.  The latter have many options when it comes to treating these pesky, unsightly veins.  For less intensive needs, there are vitamins and supplements that help reduce the severity of varicose veins, as well as home remedies that can be taken advantage of.  Other people want quicker, more drastic results, so they opt for more invasive procedures such as injections, laser therapy, or even varicose veins surgery.

Varicose veins surgery is not a complicated procedure, but often takes many visits to get the full effect depending on the size of the area that needs treated.  When choosing to have varicose veins surgery, there are different types of surgery to choose from as well. The first surgery option is where the doctor will go in a tie off the troublesome vein, and then remove it completely from the leg.  Since most varicose veins are surface veins, this procedure does not affect circulation in the legs.  This is an outpatient procedure. The side effects and after effects of this type of surgery can range from general swelling, pain, and scarring, to infection and tissue damage.  Also, a person may be unable to resume normal activity for up to four weeks.  However, as with any surgery, precautionary measures are taken before varicose veins surgery to help reduce these risks.

The second type of surgery available to sufferers of varicose veins is another outpatient procedure.  In this surgery, the veins are located using a special light, and then small incisions are made in the skin on either side of the problem vein.  Then, the veins are removed through these incisions using surgical hooks, and can usually be removed in one treatment.  This procedure is much less invasive and can lead to bruising and numbness, though both are temporary.  This procedure also allows varicose veins surgery patients to return to normal activity the next day.

With the advances in recent technology, one more option is now available to varicose vein sufferers. It is called Endoscopic vein surgery.  What happens in this procedure is that a camera is inserted into the veins and then they are cut and removed through tiny lacerations in the skin.  Side effects are less common with this type of varicose veins surgery, and patients are usually back to normal activity within two to three weeks.  Also, it must be noted that all of these procedures require at least local anesthesia but general anesthesia or an epidural can be an option depending on the patient.

No matter what your need for varicose veins surgery, there are at least a few treatment options for you.  If none of the vitamins and supplements are meeting your expectations as far as removal, and other procedures do not seem appealing or have also failed, perhaps varicose veins surgery is for you.  Talking to your doctor can help you to decide which option is best for you when choosing varicose veins surgery.
