Applying Mineral Makeup Properly

Just as with all types of makeup, proper application is the key to making it look and feel more natural and more attractive. And the best way to do that is by choosing a mineral makeup that is as close to your natural skin color as possible. A mineral makeup that is a lot lighter or darker than your skin color will result in a clear line where the makeup leaves off, and it will generally be a lot harder to blend into your skin.

Different colors for different seasons

With all types of makeup, you will have to change the shades that you use depending on the season. This is particularly true of mineral makeup however, in which the shades are more pronounced. In the summer, use a darker shade to match the color of your skin, which will likely be darkened with sun exposure. With the coming of the winter months when your skin is lighter, switch to a lighter shade of mineral makeup.

Tools of the trade

In order to apply mineral makeup, you can use a brush, a make up sponge, or simply your hands. Simply dab on a bit of the makeup using any of these tools, on the area where you would like the makeup applied, and begin blending it outwards to the rest of your skin.

Blending

The mineral makeup should be blended outwards towards the hairline. As for the nose, smooth the makeup over it then blend it into your cheeks and towards the forehead. You can tell when you are doing it right if there is no discernible line where the make up ends and your normal skin color begins.

Cleaning the tools

Again just as with all types of makeup, it is important to make sure that the tools you use are clean of any makeup residue and ready for the next use. This will make them last longer. If you apply the makeup with a sponge, you should make sure that you wash this in hot soapy water and rinse it out thoroughly. The brush on the other hand should be cleaned with a commercially available brush cleanser, preferably one that has an antibacterial solution. And of course, your hands should be washed with hot soapy water after every application of mineral makeup.

With the impressive results that you get from using mineral makeup, it is easy to get carried away. Most people–particularly those that are inexperienced at applying makeup–tend to go overboard and dab on too much. This is will likely result in an obvious and unnatural look, and you should exercise a bit of subtlety. Remember that the adage “less is more” is particularly applicable to the use of mineral makeup.
